Describe similarities and/or differences between the phases and outcomes of mitosis and meiosis.
a. Mitosis vs. meiosis
b.Chromosome number in all stages
Similarities between mitosis and meiosis-
1. Both have prophase , metaphase , anaphase and telophase.
2. Both involves nuclear division.
3. Both involves separation of chromosomes by spindle formation.
4. Both involves doubling of chromosomes.
Differences -
1. Mitosis has only one cell division while meiosis have two cell divisions.
2. Mitosis occurs in somatic cells while meiosis occurs in germ cells(sex cells).
3. Mitosis results in 2 cells while meiosis results in 4 cells.
4. Resulting cells are diploid in mitosis and haploid in meiosis.
Chromosome number - parent cell is diploid having 46 chromosomes.
Mitosis- prophase -46 , metaphase -46, anaphase -92, telophase -92 and at end each cell receives 46 chromosomes.
Meiosis 1- prophase - 46, metaphase -46, anaphase -46, telophase -46 and at end each cell receives 23 chromosomes(2 cells).
Meiosis 2 -prophase - 23, metaphase -23, anaphase -46, telophase -46 and at end each cell receives 23 chromosome (4 cells).
