Briefly describe postpartum depression.
Postpartum depression is a kind of depression suffered by a mother following childbirth, typically arising from the combination of hormonal changes, psychological adjustment to motherhood, and fatigue.
It is also called postnatal depression.
What are some of the symptoms that distinguish it from a more typical case of baby blues?
Following are the symptoms:
· Depressed mood or severe mood swings
· Excessive crying
· Difficulty bonding with your baby
· Withdrawing from family and friends
· Loss of appetite or eating much more than usual
· Inability to sleep (insomnia) or sleeping too much
· Overwhelming fatigue or loss of energy
· Reduced interest and pleasure in activities you used to enjoy
· Intense irritability and anger
· Fear that you're not a good mother
· Hopelessness
· Feelings of worthlessness, shame, guilt or inadequacy
· Diminished ability to think clearly, concentrate or make decisions
· Restlessness
· Severe anxiety and panic attacks
· Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby
· Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
What would you consider the two effective treatment methods for postpartum depression?
Following are the two effective treatment methods:
(1)Medication: Antidepressants have a direct effect on the brain. They alter the chemicals that regulate mood. Use of antidepressants under prescription of a doctor can help.
(2)Therapy: A psychiatrist, psychologist, or other mental health professional can provide counseling. Therapy can help a mother make sense of destructive thoughts and offer strategies for working through them.
Have you ever had experience with someone who has had postpartum depression?
No, I had no experience with someone who has dad such depression.
Consider some of the cultural barriers that women may face in south Texas (i.e., Hispanic culture) when seeking help.
(1)Hispanic women show signs of cultural uneasiness with the American style of healthcare.
(2)They have a tradition of privacy and individual pride that makes many Hispanics believe we have no need to ask for help from a doctor.
(3) Their family custom prevents them to reach a psychiatrist as mental disorders are considered a social taboo.
