Bad News Scenario

You are the Senior Course Convenor at Elite Education overseeing the 30 different language courses it offers for both students and working adults. Your language courses include English, French, and Spanish. These courses are very popular with learners because all curricula are designed by your team of experts and learning materials are produced in-house. However, you have just received a resignation letter, from the English Curriculum Leader, Dr Amy Shaw, who has been with Elite for 15 years. There has been rumour that she might bring a couple of popular teaching staff in her team to become partners with another education centre which is your direct competitor.

The leaving of Dr Shaw and possibly her team members will seriously jeopardize Elite Education’s position as the leading education centre in the territory. More importantly, you must ensure that the courses designed by her remain the property of Elite.

Your Task

Write a persuasive email to the Managing Director, Prof. Johnny English, in the name of Angela Lung. You should inform him of this bad news, explaining the situation as well as suggesting ways of solving the problems so that the impact of the resignation of Dr Shaw can be minimized and that the intellectual property of Elite will be protected. You must provide justification for what you suggest and persuade the Managing Director to accept your suggestions and to approve extra resources that may be needed.

Subject: Resignation of English Curriculum Leader, Dr. Amy Shaw.

Dear Managing Director, Prof. Johnny (English section),

I am writing this message to inform you that Dr. Amy Shaw has given her resignation letter. She was the English Curriculum Leader. She was with us for the last fifteen years.

It is also possible that a few other staff members may join Dr. Amy Shaw and together they may join another education center and give us direct competition.

The Elite education center is famous among the students and working-class people who are interested to learn other languages especially our English, French, and Spanish. These programs are very popular among this group.

I suspect that Dr. Amy Shaw might ask for the materials prepared by her. I request you to make such arrangements that the in-house materials should not go out of our center. I suggest you to copyright our material so that no other institution or center can use our materials.

All our curricula are produced by our expert teachers in-house, thus these are the property of the Elite education Centre.

As Dr. Amy Shaw has already resigned and I suspect a few more would follow her, looking at the present scenario I think it would be in the interest of the center that we call a meeting of our team members and take their suggestions as well. It will give us a clear picture if more staff is going to follow her or they are going to stay with our center.

If there is more staff that is going to leave the center, then we will face difficulty in preparing our curriculum on time. It may require us to hire new staff. Taking the meeting and suggestions from the staff member would increase their confidence with our center, as they will feel a part of the center.

For the reputation of our center, our curricula must exclusively remain with us and no other institution can use our materials without our permission.

It is an important and urgent step that we have to take to protect our identity and reputation of being number one in our territory.
