The Freedom Of Information Act(FOIA):-

  • It was enacted in 1966 and It's a disclosure statute.
  • It states that any person has the right to request the federal agency records or information.
  • When an agency(of the US Government) receives a proper FOIA request for a record then it should disclose the records or make it available.
  • Although the agency can prevent the record from disclosure as there are NINE exemptions to FIOA.
  • This act doesn't provide access to the records that are held by private businesses and state or local governments.

Example:-

  • If a person wants to request the information held by the council then he/she must put a proper request in writing describing all the information and also give his/her details like name and address so that the council can send the information to him/her.
  • It applies to the executive branch of the federal government including the executive office of president, the office of management but not to the president and staff.
  • In this way, this Law ensures confidentiality,privacy, or security.
