What are the major biological and psychological effects of using opiates such as morphine and heroin?
Biological Effects
Slurred speech, inattention and dilated pupils can be seen in
users of morphine and heroin
Opiates are Central Nervous System(CNS) depressants, which means it
slows down the functioning of CNS and cause sleepiness, drowsiness
and sedation.
It slows down breathing and can lead to respiratory depression. In
extreme cases, this respiratory depression can cause oxygen
deprivation and lead to organ failure.
Opiates cause the digestive system to slow down and can cause
constipation. In more serious cases, it can lead to small bowel
obstruction.
Nausea is common in users of opiates, and also this lead to
vomiting.
Psycho motor impairment, loss of coordination and slowing down of
muscular movements is seen.
If used excessively, it can adverse effect the liver.
Psychological Effects
A person starts to feel increasingly relaxed and anxiety starts
to lower and thoughts also slow down, also drowsiness
happens.
Feelings of euphoria, which is feeling extremely good and high
happens when a person states opiates.
Mental clouding and confusion can be caused. Pain reliving and
sedative and calming effects can be seen.
