Compare and contrast Jean Watsons and Patricia Benners nursing theories. How do they differ based on their intent, scope, and goals? Which one might be more relevant to your future role, and why
According to Jean Watson's theory, Watson believed that disease can be cured but illness can't be if proper care is not given. Through this theory she wanted to increase the dignity of the nurses. She used concepts from personal and professional experiences. The goal was to enhance public view of humanity in correlation with nursing. According to her theory, caring can be demonstrated and performed interpersonally. Caring can contains carative factors which can complete human needs. The practice of caring is the main centre of nursing. She followed Florence Nightingale.
Patricia Berners theory was "From novice to expert".According to her, a nurse can develop skills over time from personal experience. She described five levels of nursing experiences:- novice, advanced beginner, competent, proficient, expert. Her thoughts were based on Drefuys model.
They differ broadly on their intent scope and goal. The basic concept of Jean was regarding how caring is important in nursing whereas Patricia's concept was regarding the skill of nurses. So both are completely different concepts having different goals, scopes and intentions too.
Jean Watson's concept was more relevant to me and I see her theory as my future guideline. This is because she went in depth of nursing concept and dug out the very essence of the field. Caring is the main thing and it can cure everyone.
