What are some of the unique challenges that survivors of military sexual assault face?
One of the most important factors that contribute to military sexual assault is fear. Most of the superiors sexually assaulted or harassed people using their power to threaten them to comply. So, the primary issue one needs to fight with these victims would be fear. The real and perceived threats from the superiors will make the victims experience anxiety aftermath.
Second most important challenge would be overcoming the incident itself. If they are not able to overcome it successfully because of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, they will be forced to look for sanctuary elsewhere such as in drugs.
Thirdly, they may not be able to focus their life on anything. This will deviate from their personal and professional life thus forcing them to make difficult decisions that would put their life in danger by committing suicide.
It could cause unwanted pregnancy that would become a burden to the one who was sexually assaulted. Other risks may include sexually transmitted diseases and physical injuries that might keep reminding them of the assault.
