In: Psychology
First, describe the major brain mechanisms of eating, thirst, and hunger. Second, choose an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge-eating) and present a case describing the person (age, gender, student/job status) and the symptoms and behaviors he/she is exhibiting. Then explain how he/she ignores the cues his/her body is giving to maintain homeostasis.
The Human brain is divided into four major parts and our eating, thirst, hunger controlled by the hypothalamus. The part of the frontal cortex, hypothalamus also control emotions, feelings and fundamental needs like hunger and thirst.
The eating disorder can be caused by biological and psychological imbalance so that we will treat this problem by various ways.
Case Study
Miss R is a single structured young lady and a student and passionate about the dance, who went to the psychologist regarding eating problems. According to the information provided by her family, R was a good student till the age of 15, when she started self-vomiting. Her behavior was started due to the teacher’s role when the teacher told her to control the body weight if she wanted to be a good dancer. The teacher of R believed that her weight is not good as she was 120 lbs. at the age of 15. Last 3-4 years miss R shows the rejection of food. Sometimes she eats very little but shortly goes for vomiting because she thought that the food would increase her weight.
In the case of Miss R, we can see the firm symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa, and this disorder developed by fake learning which related to the weight control. The Anorexia nervosa can be developed by social support, learning, and conditioning. As we know the dance student need thin figure so that they can develop such kind of disorders.
Miss R missed the symptoms of homeostasis because she was willing to control weight at any condition which leads her to the eating disorder.
