What are some components of American society and culture that make poverty less visible.

Expert Solution

America is an individualistic and materialistic society whose people are in the pursuit of pleasure above everything. This would mean that individuals would be worried about themselves and as long as they are satisfied and their needs are fulfilled, they would be happy and they wouldn’t care about many people who live in poverty. Thus, many wouldn’t worry about what goes on around them. secondly, the capitalistic economy would suppress and oppress the poor so that their voices are not heard. Projecting America as a superpower and richest country in the world would hide the all the negative aspects such as, poverty, unemployment, discrimination etc. Thirdly, the government and other institutions are run by the power elites and the racially majority people which would mean that the policies and projects in the country would be designed in a way to promote the interests of the wealthy and not the poor.
