What challenges do women face in the field of corrections? Provide specific examples. In your opinion, what can be done to change these challenges?
Although it's said that gender
equality is achieved in many areas of life, in reality the remains
of make dominant thoughts and the make physical superiority are
still at work. The freedom of women and openness of men are still
something to be questioned, especially in the criminal justice
system with more emphasis on the correctional institutions.
Women face lot of issues such as income disparity, sexual
harassment, delay in promotion etc. When it comes to prison or any
other correctional area, unequal treatment from their male
counterparts will be the primary issue. The second thing is that
they can't speak with the inmates in an authoritative tone because
of their physical make-up. The inmates might not mind them because
they might think that the women officer wouldn't touch them. They
would be vulnerable both to coworker and inmate sexual
harassment.
The workplace discrimination should change and women should get a
more supportive environment from their male counterparts. Women
officers working on correction institutions should be backed by
more protection from the prison management. Finally, government s
should recruit more women correction officers. Men need to get over
from their superiority complex.
