Menopause is a stage in life when a woman stops menstruating and marks the end of a woman's reproductive years. Natural menopause is the permanent ending of menstruation that is not brought on by any type of medical treatment. It is marked by three stages, namely, perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause. Perimenopause can begin 8 to 10 years before menopause, when the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen. It lasts up until menopause, the point when the ovaries stop releasing eggs. On the other hand, postmenopause are the years after menopause. During this stage, women are at increased risk for health conditions such as osteoporosis and heart disease.
The experience of chronic stress can cause women to experience symptoms similar to menopause due to increased cortisol levels. However, stress does not actually induce menopause but mimics its symptoms. This is referred to as stress menopause. Menopause can, however, be induced externally. Surgical menopause is a type of induced menopause, in which menopause is induced by removing the ovaries surgically (by bilateral oophorectomy).
