LP2.2 Assignment: Patient Care Partnership
In the past two Learning Plans you've studied various codes that can govern the behavior of healthcare administrators, including the ACHE Code of Ethics, the Patient Care Partnership, and the ethical theorists you encountered in Learning Plan 1. In this assignment, you'll apply the codes and theories you've learned about to the following healthcare management dilemma.
You are the healthcare manager in a university medical center. After an inspection, JCAHO, your accreditor, notes that patient satisfaction surveys give you a low rating. Although your hospital has a great track record for disease detection, treatment, and monitoring, patients routinely rate their experience at and satisfaction with the hospital as low.
In follow-up interviews with patients, JCAHO discovers that patients felt they and their families were not well-informed about upcoming procedures and options. They had a general feeling of uncertainty about their care and treatment. One former patient stated, "The doctor spent more time talking with the medical residents and student nurses than with me!"
Answer each of the following questions in a paragraph of 5-7 sentences (for a total of 4 paragraphs):
Which ethical principles would you apply to this scenario? Which ethical theorists would you use to guide you? Refer to your textbook, putting all direct citations in quotes.
Which parts of the AHA's Patient Care Partnership document would you apply to this scenario? Refer to specific parts of the document, putting all direct citations in quotes.
Which parts of the ACHE Code of Ethics would you apply to this scenario? Refer to specific parts of the document, putting all direct citations in quotes.
Describe an "action plan" to present to the accrediting body (JCAHO) to convince them you're serious about improving your patient satisfaction scores.
ACHE (American College of Healthcare Executives) Code of Ethics:
The purpose of the Code of Ethics of the American College of Healthcare Executives is to serve as a standard of conduct for members. It contains standards of ethical behavior for healthcare executives in their professional relationships. These relationships include colleagues, patients or others served; members of the healthcare executive's organization and other organizations; the community; and society as a whole.
QUE: Which ethical principles would you apply to this scenario? Which ethical theorists would you use to guide you? AND Which parts of the ACHE Code of Ethics would you apply to this scenario?
According to the ACHE in this case the ethics that should come in the power are
Part 1 sub-part 3 and 5 and Part 2
Part 1: THE HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVE'S RESPONSIBILITIES TO THE PROFESSION OF HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT
sub-part: Comply with all laws and regulations pertaining to healthcare management in the jurisdictions in which the healthcare executive is located or conducts professional activities;
sub-part: Avoid the improper exploitation of professional relationships for personal gain;
Part 2: THE HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVE'S RESPONSIBILITIES TO PATIENTS OR OTHERS SERVED
All patients should be treated with full of integrity and should be informed in detail about his or her condition and treatment process
QUE: Which parts of the AHA's Patient Care Partnership document would you apply to this scenario?
AHA's Patient Care Partnership document contains:
Involvement in your care.
Patients and Doctor often make decisions about the case before
patient go to the hospital. Other times, especially in emergencies,
those decisions are made during your hospital stay. When
decision-making takes place, it should include:
Discussing Patient's medical condition and information about medically appropriate treatment choices. To make informed decisions with the doctor, patient need to understand:
QUE: Describe an "action plan" to present to the accrediting body (JCAHO) to convince them you're serious about improving your patient satisfaction scores.
A hospital should always try to satisfy there patients and try to score high in JCAHO (Joint Commission: Accreditation, Health Care, Certification) standard and another reason to do so is to avoid the ACHE code of ethics last part:
THE HEALTHCARE EXECUTIVE'S RESPONSIBILITY TO REPORT VIOLATIONS OF THE CODE
A member of ACHE who has reasonable grounds to believe that another member has violated this Code has a duty to communicate such facts to the Ethics Committee.
And to do so there has to be an action plan that can ensure JCAHO that the hospital is serious about their ratings, so one plan that can be implemented is to make a special department at least of 3 members that do the following course of action.
To make the department of feedback take action as soon as possible (within days)
Give some power to the department of feedback so they don’t feel hopeless when the times of take action comes
