Nurturing relationships between caring adults and children have the power to heal troubled lives" (Rice & Groves, 2005, p. 18). Based on the Child Trauma Toolkit and the essay "Respectful Teaching with Infants and Toddlers" from Concepts for Care, identify three strategies that can be used by child development professionals to develop nurturing relationships between adults and children. How can each of the practices you identified contribute to children's development of resiliency?
Appropriate guidance and socialization strategies support the healthy mental development of all young children. Based on the essay "Socialization and Guidance with Infants and Toddlers" from Concepts for Care and explain, using examples, how attention to developing and fostering healthy interactions within a respectful environment can both cultivate infant/toddler mental health and foster resilience.
Although children may unfortunately experience many different kinds of trauma, behavioral signs and symptoms of trauma are fairly consistent across children. Strategies supporting the development and learning needs of children who have been traumatized require quality, individualized caring and learning experiences that are in tune with each child's unique emotional needs (Rice & Groves, 2005). Review the Child Trauma Toolkit. Identify and explain two teaching strategies that meet the development and learning needs of all children, including those who are most needy, and two adaptations, or special considerations, that child development professionals may need to be mindful of with children who have been traumatized.
Question 1: Identify three strategies that can be used by children development professional to develop nurturing relationship between adults and children.
Answer: Respect is the key for best practice and for meeting the developmental needs of infants and toddlers. Question 2: How attention developing and fostering healthy interaction within a respectful environment can both cultivate infant/toddler mental health and foster resilience?
Answer: A traumatic events affects the child’s mental and physical growth and development. The positive and negative experiences in family, school and community frames the belief system of a child. In order to identify the degree of impairment or trauma effect, the child should be able to ventilate his/her feelings. In case of children with language its easy but the ones whose language has not yet developed needs good non verbal communication on the part of the caregiver to develop a mutual trust and security.
The respectful environment should be according to the choice of the child because the child will express himself only in a safe and secure environment. The caregiver who gives proper attention to the concerns of the child and is ready to support him, is only accepted by him. The traumatic experience maybe because of someone who is very near and dear to him. In that case the child will not easily trust anyone. By giving good attention, love and adequate support, the child will show readiness to face any challenges that is going to come and will also foster resilience
For example: A girl toddler who is watches his mother being ill treated by his father, refuses to interact with any male person who comes near to her with a fear be assaulted as well. She identifies every male to be her father and starts crying. As the language is not fully developed its difficult to deal such cases. The caregiver should be a female who can help to identify that its only her father who is assaulting his mother not every male. She should be given complete attention and should also be introduced to men who will not harm them but rather help them to overcome her negative feelings.
Question 3: Identify and explain two teaching strategies that meet the development and learning needs of all children including those who are most needy and two adaptations or special consideration that child development professional may need to be mindful of with children who have been traumatized.
