Many human disorders are caused by defects in genes; some doctors argue that we can transfer genes in order to correct this; some say that the transfer can cause uncontrolled outcomes causing more harm. What do you think and why?

Expert Solution

gene therapy is an experimental technique that uses genes to treat or prevent diseases. In the future, this technique may allow doctors to treat a disorder by inserting a gene into a patient's cell instead of using drugs or surgery. gene therapy holds promise for treating a wide range of diseases. But it has some potential risks,

A Gene cant easily is inserted directly into the cell. usually, it delivered using a carrier, called vectors. most common gene therapy vectors are viruses.

  • it causes unwanted immune system reactions by introducing new viruses as intruded and attack them.it causes inflammation and even organ failure.
  • Targeting the wrong cells-it may affect more than one type of cell.it's possible that the altered viruses may infect additional cells-not just targeted cells containing mutated genes.so it causing healthy cells damage and even cancer.
  • viruses cause infection- once it introduced into the body, the viruses may recover their original ability to cause diseases.
  • possibility of causing tumors-if the new genes can be inserted at the wrong place it may chance of insertion leads to tumor formation

that's why the doctors say gene transfer can cause uncontrolled outcomes causing more harm.

Inborn errors of metabolism are disorders resulting from genetic defects of metabolic genes that regulate energy metabolism. Although rare, there are 2 reported inborn errors of metabolism affecting the process of gluconeogenesis. The first results in a deficiency of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (FBPase) and the second results in a deficiency in phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCK). Both deficiencies present with the symptom of hypoglycermia (low blood glucose) early in life during periods of fasting. a) What are three main sources of glucose normally used...

Many critics argue that greed in the mortgage markets caused the credit crisis. Yet many market advocates suggest that greed is good, as the thirst for profits by firms that participate in mortgage markets allows for economic growth. Write a short essay on how regulations can allow for greed while also ensuring proper transparency in the mortgage markets so that another credit crisis does not occur

Many people argue about whether or not it is important to save animal diversity. Should human hardship be factored into the equation? Set up your own personal debate, and come up with several reasons why maintaining animal diversity is important and then some scenarios of when you think human survival/benefit might be more important.

2) In class, we investigated the problem of horizontal transfer of antibiotic genes between bacteria found in animals routinely fed antibiotics and bacteria that might affect human health. We focused on ermB gene that enables bacteria to resist the antibiotic erythromycin (A drug commonly used in both therapeutic and agricultural applications). Investigate the same biological problem by doing BLAST search for another potential gene. You need to mention whether you think that there is horizontal gene transfer between bacteria found...

Some people argue that with the limited money we have available, we should NOT fund pure research projects in physics like exploring the properties of ‘dark matter’ and determining whether it exists. Describe how Maxwell’s exploration of the relationships between electric and magnetic fields could be used as a rationale for funding ‘dark matter’ research.
