A dump truck with a heaped capacity of 10 yd3 is used to dispose of excavated material at a dump site 3.5 mile away from the job site. The average velocity of the dump truck is 40 kph. The dump time is 30 seconds, load time is 40 seconds. Assume a 50 minutes/hour efficiency, determine the production of the dump truck to complete the 12’ deep excavation of 100’x200’ size building footprint?
Capacity of dumb truck = 10 cub yard = 270 cub ft
total volume of excavation = 12*100*200 = 24000 cub ft
Number of times the dumb truck should go for disposing the excavated soil = 24000 / 270 = 88.88 = 89 times
Time required for the truck to dispose heaped soil once = time for travelling + time for dumping + time for loading
= distance/velocity + time for dumping + time for loading
Note: truck has to dumb and come back so distance is doubled and 1 mile is 1.609 km
= ((2*5.6327)/40)*60 + 30/60 + 40/60 ( multiplied and divided the terms by 60 inorder to convert hours and seconds into minute)
= 16.898 +0.5+ 0.67 = 18.068 minutes
Time required for dumbing complete excavated soil = 89 * 18.068
= 1608.052 min
Since the efficiency of truck is 50min/ hour, total time required in hour = 1608.052/50
= 32.16 hours
Production of dumb truck is 32.16 hours to dispose 24000 cub ft soil.
