The Watergate case was a US-led political scandal concerning U.S. government. President Richard Nixon who contributed to Nixon's resignation from 1972 to 1974. The controversy arose from the persistent attempts by the Nixon administration to cover up its presence at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C. Watergate Office Building on June 17, 1972 failed to break-in. Following the arrest of the five suspects the press and the U.S. The Department of Justice related the cash found on them to the Nixon reelection campaign committee at the time.
Several significant disclosures and unprecedented presidential behavior against the enquiry later in 1973 caused the House to begin an impeachment process against Nixon The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Nixon needed to open the Oval Office tapes to government investigators. The tapes showed that Nixon had conspired to cover up after the break-in activities and sought to use federal agents to stop the investigation. The House Judiciary Committee subsequently approved impeachment articles against Nixon for obstruction of justice, abuse of power and contempt of Congress.
