Describe 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages for masonry building, reinforced concrete building and steel structural building, respectively

Solutions

Expert Solution

MASONRY BUILDING:

Advantages:

1)Non-combustible:

Due to this non - combustible nature it provides fire protection to building and its occupants.

2)Duable and resistant:

Masonry can withstand large amounts of compressive weight loads. It has longer lifespan than any other type building.

Disadvantages:

1)Moisture absorber:

It absorbs Moisture when it rains.

2)It is not good at handling torsional loads. So it has low tensile strength.

It is expensive and also need heavy foundation.

REINFORCED CONCRETE BUILDING :

Advantages :

1)High compressive strength:

It has high compressive strength compared to other buildings.

2)Low maintainence cost:

The maintainence cost of R. C building is very low.

And Also its more durable and acts like a rigid member within minimum deflection.

Disadvantages :

1)The tensile strength of reinforced concrete is about one-tenth of its compressive strength.

2)Due to shrinkage there will be Crack development and strength loss.

STEEL STRUCTURAL BUILDING :

Advantages :

1)Tensile strength

Steel has high tensile strength.

2)Light in weight:

Since it is light in weight very useful for large structures.

Disadvantages ;

  1. It has high maintenance costs as it has to be painted to make it corrosion-resistantThere are extensive fireproofing costs involved.

  2. If steel loses it's ductility property then there is a chance of increase in brittle fractures.

QUESTION 1 (30%). Concrete is required for a reinforced concrete building. The 28-day target mean (cube) compressive strength should be 40 N/mm2. Use the BRE method to determine the concrete mix proportions for 0.05 m3 concrete (BRE tables and figures are attached below for each stage).
