After viewing the YouTube Video "Transportation Challenges"please post comments on measures to alleviate congestion in Trinidad and Tobago.
The cause of significant traffic congestion in our country: (a) a de facto government policy that has never understood its responsibility for planning, maintaining and regulating public transportation; (b) a specified government policy that favors private vehicle ownership; and (c) a government policy of over-concentration of public offices and agencies in the capital city, while not imposing a similar policy openly.
Measures to enhance the transportation network can usually be grouped into the following groups: (a) Measures to affect the choice of mode (e.g. park and ride facilities, carpooling, auto-restricted areas, parking restrictions, growth of public transportation and enhancement of its characteristics such as, schedules, regularity, terminal and stop locations, pedestrian facilities,
(b) measures to influence the option of route and intersection control (e.g. route surveillance and management, designated roads and lanes, one-way systems, traffic signals management or interchanges, etc.); and (c) measures to influence the time and place of origin or destination of the trip (e.g. staggered operating hours, decentralization of land use, road tolls, etc.); This will include steps which can help form urban areas into appropriate configurations for land use.
The possible initiatives selected must be (a) for all traveling public members, regardless of their abilities or disabilities, (b) capable of delivering the requisite individual and goods ability, (c) versatile enough to accommodate ongoing changes in transport preferences and needs, (d) effective, (e) accessible, in terms of capital and operational costs, (f) balanced, representing national transport needs.
