1. Consider the questions posed by the author of our textbook: People, Progress, and Nature, Is Conflict Inevitable? Do you think that conflict is inevitable if we are to progress as a society and why?
2. what do you feel is the most important environmental problem or issue that we face today and why?
3. Do you feel that we as a society are doing enough to address environmental problems? If yes, provide an example. If no, identify who or what is preventing society from addressing these problems?
Ans 2. An environment problem that we are facing today is lack of continuous supply of clean water for human uses and for other living things. Even though water is a renewable resource but like all things on planet Earth, it observed to be changing. This change is mostly is not caused by nature rather it is driven by human activities such as population growth, migration, Climate change, land use change and energy choices and global poverty. For the interest of our present and future of our children, we must resolve to overcome or adapt to these driving forces and prevent the problems associated with declining and degraded water resources.
Ans 3. To overcome the declining and degraded water resources the way we view and use water must evolve. We must recognize each cause that is responsible and seeks to mitigate them as far as possible. People should be made aware to make better choices about water resources. For example, use of recycle water for watering the plants and save the clean water for drinking purposes. There is a need to design water infrastructures such as rainwater harvesting systems and groundwater recharging waterbodies. The scientific community can come up with the ways to better monitoring, modelling, and forecasting of our water future so that decision-makers have better information upon which to act. The awareness and motivation towards water sustainability must be brought at the individual, community and national level then only meaningful difference will be realized.
