How did Nelson Mandela’s vision of democracy compare with that of Mikhail Gorbachev? Is there one, singular form of democracy today?
In 1944 Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress to
resist the racist policies of the White-led goverment of South
Africa. Later this struggle would be exacted into aperthied and his
fight would turn into a life long struggle. Nelson Mandela's vision
was of a nation of lively citizens, Allowing the Africans to go
ahead from years of weakening policies suffered under colonialism
and apartheid. Mandela choose to inspire them instead of giving
them answers and allow them to think that if they work together,
all of them will have a better life. His hard work and long journey
to freedom let them understand that the roads that they still have
to go travel more for freedom. The South Africans as well as the
world will remeber him for that. He teach his people to dream, to
think, to speak, to debate, to write , to keep on searching for a
solution that will benefit for all. He show the light of a world
where all have equal rights, voice, regardeless of sex, caste,
gender, religion or race. Mandela show his power in reawekening
South Africa and bringing the diverse divided people together. He
taught us that democracy can survive only where all citizens have
equal right to agree and disagree . He educate us that one man
could not drive the ideals of democracy. The real participation of
common citizens in the system of democracy was shown by him.In 1993
he was awarded with nobel peace price.
Meanwhile, Mikhail Gorbachev in 1985 came into power in Soviet
Union and launched "glasnot" and "perestroika" reforms to bring
more democracy in communist Soviet Union. He tried to reform the
Communist Party in Soviet Union and formed a democratic party of
reform. Gorbachev was very proud of and show 'perestroika'
(restructuring) as his main achievement . perestroika was to
reforming Soviet Union politically and economically. It also
restructured the international relations based on the rejection of
forcible intervention abroad and nuclear disarmament. infusing of
democratic elements into the Soviet Union's single party government
was the first step to democratize Soviet Union.
By making way to end Cold war by ending Moscow's grip in eastern
Europe in 1989, Gobachev won Nobel price a year before he lost
power when Soviet Union itslef demolished in 1991.
