Write the reaction that is happening in the oxygen generator in symbols, including all states and balance. (used magnesium, hydrogen peroxide and water) Thank you!

Solutions

Expert Solution

Write the reaction that is happening in the hydrogen generator in symbols, including all states and balance (used zinc, HCl, and H2O)

Zn (s) + 2 HCl (aq) -----------------------------------> ZnCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

zinc is a strong reducing agent and it reduces hydrogen ions to molecular hydrogen and forces it out of solution.
Zinc is consumed in the reaction while hydrogen is being generated. When the bubbling in reaction ceases it indicates the end of the reaction. The reaction type is single replacement.

Write the reaction that is happening in the oxygen generator in symbols, including all states and balance. (used magnesium, hydrogen peroxide and water

Nonthing happens under these conditions.

In an oxygen generator usually manganese dioxide is treated with hydrogen peroxide which releases oxygen as shown in the balanced equation below.

2H2O2 + MnO2 ----------------------->  MnO2 + 2H2O + O2

This reaction is spontaneous and exothermic. The MnO2 is not a reactant. It is a catalyst.
