Write the dissociation reaction for the following acids in water. Use the appropriate arrow symbols. Label the acid, base , conjugate acid and conjugate base for each:

HCl(hydrochloic acid)

C6H6COOH (benzoic acid)

Solutions

Expert Solution

HCl dissolved in water dissociates to give Cl- and H3O+. Here HCl is an acide and the water that it interacts with is a base and the Cl- formed is the conjugate base of HCl and H3O+ the conjugate acid of H3O+.

Benzoic acid on the other hand is a weak acid and it dissociates partially into its congugate base in water. Following thr same analogie given above

C6H6COOH   +    H2O       C6H6COO-             +           H3O+

Acid                    base           Conjugate base        Conjugate acid

                                            of benzoic acid            of water
