Expert Solution

There are various gigantic structures on the Arabian gulf such as Burj Khalifa and the skyscraper in UAE these structures are very huge around 800-1000 meters long and of sufficient width also. Geotechnical engineering also plays vital role in construction of these types of structures as this branch of civil engineering deals with the strength and quality of the foundation being provided to the structures. Foundation is the basic need for the development of any structure as the structure are being laid on the foundation only and more stronger the foundation of any building is more will the allowance of the structure to be huge as it would withstand high loads. So to deal with these kind of parameters regarding the foundation which are the soil quality, the stress bearing capacity of the soil in that area and all these things will be required. All these parameters are studied under the branch of geotechnology.

Geotechnical Engineering uses the principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics which helps to determine the knowledge about the subsurface and the material in that area. All the qualities and parameters of these types of materials are being investigated and after that various methods are being implemented so that the stress and load bearing capacity of the surface is being increased. All these practices would lead to the possibility of construction of some gigantic structures as seen in Arabian Gulf. So as from the above reasons and requirements, it is seen that the applications of geotechnical engineering are of very great importance in the construction of gigantic structures such as Burj Khalifa ans Skyscraper.

Give an example of how annealing is used in an engineering application. Also, briefly explain how and why the mechanical properties—for a metal—of yield strength, ductility, hardness, Young’s modulus, ultimate tensile strength, and toughness are different for a cold worked metal vs a metal that has been annealed at a relatively high temperature for a relatively long time (must talk about grain size).
