1) How would you increase the genetic diversity of the island populations with a low F coefficient?
2) If you can increase the genetic diversity on the island, what would you think would happen with the F value and would this change be fast or slow, and why?
Genetic diversity -- it is defined as the variety of genes in an area.
Island population -- island is a small land area. And island population is nothing but small population.
F coefficient -- also called inbreeding coefficient. Inbreeding is a process in which one kind of allele becomes common due to mating between same kind of individuals resulting in production of progenies similar or identical to them.
It is common in small population where no varitey is present or are very less in number sooner or later an allele becomes common. It can be beneficial as well as harmful in other cases.
Ans 1) we have been asked how can we increase the genetic diversity in island population having low F coefficient. Low F coefficient means the allele present is less in number. It is basically comparison between alleles.
To increase genetic diversity we can use following methods :
Mutation : it is the sudden change in gene sequences. It can occur naturally as well as can be introduced artificially. But to mutate require much effort artificially and hence become complex. So,we can avoid this in this population.
Random mating or gene flow -- it is one of the easiest method for introducing genetic diversity in a population. In it individuals with different alleles which are sexually compatible with the population and introduced and are allowed to mate. This will result in introduction of different alleles and is able to increase genetic diversity.
So, I would use RANDOM MATING or GENE FLOW to increase genetic diversity in the island population.
Ans 2) as I will use random mating or gene flow to increase genetic variation. The F coefficient value will increase as high F value means greater variations or varitey of alleles. This change would be FAST as the island population means small population and variations are introduced in a small population in a fast rate.
This can be understood through the example if coin. A coin has 2 faces; heads and tails. So, as we toss the coin we will randomly and fastly get our results of will it be head or tail.
But as we took a chit system of selection having many chits assume 10 chits. So, getting a chit with the desired result is 1/10 probability. And hence to took out 1 type we have to pick chit many times.
So, in coin it is easy to get the output because of 2 outcomes but in chit system it becomes complex because of 10 outcomes. Hence, the smaller the population higher will be the chances of getting the desired result while bigger population, less chances of getting desired results.
So, F coffecient will change FAST or this change is fast.
