But the developer replies back and says that this is not a valid bug. How would you tackle this situation and what would be your next steps?” Provide a thorough and complete answer to this interview question.

Below are the steps that I would follow:

Completely understand the Project Requirements or look into the documentation of the feature. This would give the tester a better understanding of the bug and if it is actually one.
Now, if as per the documentaion tester still feels it is a bug then set up a 1:1 meeting with the developer and understand his point of view. Also take a chance here to explain the developer your points.
Test the feature with a wide set of data so that the unexpected behaviour can be represented to the other developers/team lead/manager.
Provide the developer with a Bug Report and explain him the severity of the bug. Make sure to report which system functionality is getting affected.
If the point of views still donot match with the developer, then set up a meeting with Team Lead and developer for a healthy discussion. Here the manager/team lead can take the final decision.

It is very important to have good relationship with the developers as we are working as a team. And it has been rightly said by someone "Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships".
