Manager 1: Kelice has a specific background in research. She manages staff who provide research support to another department that delivers behavioral health services to youth. Kelice supports her staff and is very organized; however, she often takes a very black and white view of issues. Upper level leadership values Kelly’s latest research on the therapeutic division’s services. Kelice is very motivated and driven and expects the same from her staff.

Manager 2: Lina has a strong background in social science research and evaluation. She manages staff that work on different projects within the agency. She is known as a problem solver and is extremely supportive of her staff. She is very organized and has a wealth of experience in evaluation of family services. Linda is very capable and can sometimes take on too much.

Question 1 Explain the leadership style of both Kelice and Lina based on Blake Mouton Managerial Grid.

Question 2 In your opinion, how both Kelice and Lina can utilise Path Goal Theory and Transformational Leadership approach in their situation.

As per Blake Mouton Management Grid we see that, there are 5 leadership styles as below:

  • Impoverished style
  • Country club style
  • Middle of road style
  • Perish style
  • Team style

Kelice here demonstrates more of "Status quo leadership style or middle of middle road" due to her black and white approach and vocal nature, however her motivation skills do the limelight which keeps fine balance of people and production.

Secondly, Lina demonstrates " team leadership style" where there is higjest concern for people and production. Here team motivated and supportive and makes the job easier.

As per path goal theory of leadership, leaders behaviour is based on situation wherein its Contingent to motivation and satisfaction and overall performance of team members. Both lina and Kellice are supportive and take holistic view of members and support them, motivate them to achieve better performance by better problem solving.

Similarly both display Transformational Leadership kind of characteristics where rhey bring wholesome changes which are drastically colloquial and bold and can have long lasting impact on success of organisation. Here vision and inspiration is demonstrated and subsequently teams act on that to achieve KPIs.
