Background: Sydney was a newly hired project manager at a consulting firm. She has previous experience working on project teams, but had never led a project on her own. She has only been with the firm for two weeks and has spent a week of that time in onboarding. Her manager, the head of operations, has just assigned her to a rather large project. The project is to evaluate the current processes in use within the organization specifically focused in two areas: new service development and client engagement. Sydney was told to select who she needed to work on the project and reach out to the managers of both groups to get the project started.
The Problem: While excited about the opportunity, Sydney realized she had a few challenges ahead:
Sydney needed to start the project fairly soon. She didn’t have the luxury of taking time to build relationships and get to know people before the project had to begin
Question : How would the Project Manager determine the stakeholders and the core team? What skills would they need?
Sydney will have to employ the technique of stakeholders analysis in order to determine the key stakeholders inside and outside the project environment. By carrying out a stakeholders analysis, she will determine which parties are the most affected by the activities of the project in both positive and negative way. By effectively identifying the stakeholders, Sydney will be able to understand the expectations of the stakeholders with the project. She should take help from the operations manager in order to effectively move forward with selecting the core team members. The relevant manager will be able to help Sydney in shortlisting the right candidates with the right skills for her team. She is an experienced professional, however her lack of knowledge about the company's employees is making this situation hard for her.
She needs to list down all the skills she requires to effectively to evaluate the current processes in use within the organization specifically focused in two areas: new service development and client engagement. Some of the most important skills that will be needed for this project are
