What are vulnerable populations? Why are they vulnerable? Where might you encounter vulnerable people in your daily life?
Answer: According to UN , there are certain groups of populations which can be regarded as vulnerable populations irrespective of the place and country, these are women and girls , children , refugees ,internally displaced persons ,stateless persons , national minorities, indigenous peoples ,migrant workers ,disabled persons, elderly persons, HIV positive persons and AIDS victims and LGBT community.Though it must be considered that Clearly this is not an complete list of persons in need of particular protection, as many other groups not discussed in this part suffer from discrimination and oppression.
Irrespective of whether the country is developing or developed, rich or poor, Western or Eastern ,mentioned groups are considered as vulnerable as they used to face discrimination in one or other form. For example ELIZABETH W. FERNEA who is renowned thinker , vocal about the issues of women had wrote "THE LOOK BEHIND THE VEIL " in which She argued that Women are always discriminated from men apart from their physical distinctions, they socially and culturally also distinguished and Until human beings come to terms with this basic issue, purdah and the veil, in some form will continue to exist in both the East and the West.
There are similar example exists for each of the above mentioned groups.Hence they are considered as Vulnerable and needs more upliftment, protection, security and equalityin the society.
You used to encounter any of these groups almost each day of your life. For example I myself have witnessed various such incidences , one of them is a case of a women whom I know was going through the domestic violence.Another one is seeing physically disabled person facing difficulties while adopting modern infrastructure and transportation system.
So there is need of more social sensitivity and awareness about the rights of such groups and individuals, need of more government support via different schemes and legislation to improve their quality of life and empowerment.
Hope it helps!
