How might we think of this novel “Under thr Feet of Jesus” as not only about farm labor but also about the way in which work is gendered? How much is this novel about what is sometimes termed (inaccurately I might add) "women's work" or "domestic labor"?

Expert Solution

The novel themes out marginalization and the experience of a women. It depicts the brutal working conditions of the labourers.  Viramontes focuses on the character labor Estrella and her family performance in the fields. The effect of work is often depicted on the piscadores' bodies. Her grandfather was having a stooped back who was carrying cement in his back. The work is said to be so brutal and intensive in nature , and it reshapes bodies of the workers. The characters in the novel are continuously tired, hungry, and was aching after spending long hours working in the fields.Estrella is very much exhausted and worn down and she struggles her day at most not to cry . By emphasizing the real nature and extent upto which Estrella's work goes on, Viramontes tries to highlight everything that migrant labors contribute to an American society.

The author being a feminist, point out the unique burdens of being female. It brings out the additional domestic work that a women should do in order to brought up a family. Overall it brings out the struggles that a Labour faces and are suffering to live their lives to the fullest.
