Do you agree with the George W. Bush White House conclusion that a sharp reduction in immigration would be a poorly targeted and inefficient way to assist low-wage Americans? Why or why not?
George W. Bush is right in saying that a sharp reduction in immigration would be a poorly targeted and inefficient way to assist low-wage Americans. Immigrants lead to an increase in the labor supply, and it also increases the efficiency of the workers due to higher competition. The wage rates also increases with time, with an increase in the immigrants. Hence, the local people feel insecure due to higher job competitiveness.
Bu there are many benefits of having higher number of immigrants, take for example the startup data of the company, although 17% of American population are immigrants, but 30% of the new startups in America are started by the immigrants. A study by New American Economy revealed that 44% of the the companies on the 2018 Fortune 500 list were founded by immigrants or the children of immigrants. Together, these companies in fiscal year 2017 brought in $5.5 trillion in revenue—a figure that is greater than the gross domestic product (GDP) of every country in the world other than the United States and China. Immigrants also help in rural communities, that have been experiencing population decline in the recent years. Immigrants are generally quality workers which will lead to higher productivity and hence greater efficiency. Therefore, I agree with all that George W. Bush had said in his speech.
