(Answer) Ebrahim evaluates whether or not her family is cosmopolitan, based on several everyday attributes. She notices qualities like his family’s acceptance of media and communication, openness to learning other languages, living abroad and the family members living abroad, living with people from other cultures, engaging with foreigners within the locality.
She concludes that individuals like Wasim have their adherence to their conviction, in this case – Islam. However, Wasim has learned different languages, is attempting to understand and harmonise with different cultures. It is not necessary that an individual should give up one’s convictions in order to have liberal views or to embrace the different facets of society.
I agree with Ebrahim’s perspective because she explains that her diasporic family accepts the world and chooses to live harmoniously within the world through their belief in Islam and not through nationalist feelings. Although Ebrahim loves her country, South Africa, she expresses that the love should go beyond just a nation or a religion and transcend into a love for harmony and a global community.
