Describe two specific roles for the pancreas in digestion and glucose homeostasis. For each role, identify the specific enzymes/hormones secreted by the pancreas.

Why are cichlids considered an example of adaptive radiation? How is cichlid diet connected to morphology?

Solutions

Expert Solution

The main functions of pancreas is the digestion of foods. Digestion means breakdown the foods with the help of various pancreatic enzymes.

The digestion of fats and proteins etc is the main functions of pancreas.

  • Pancreatic proteases- trypsin and chymotrypsin. These enzymes help to digest proteins.
  • The Pancreatic lipase - that helps to digest fat.

The glucose homeostasis means, maintain the glocose level in bloo or levels of blood sugar.

Pancreas secreated insulin, which maintains the blood glucose level in blood. Insulin convert the soluble glucose to to insoluble carbohydrate called glycogen. This is stored in the liver and muscles.

Cichild is a fish. cichlids considered an example of adaptive radiation because they evolved very rapidly from a single ancestor. Tbey also prefer for relatively fast evolution.
