Water is flowing in a 200 mm pipeline fitted with a 45o bend in a vertical plane. The diameter at the outlet of the bend is 500 mm. The pipe axis at the inlet is horizontal and the outlet is 1.5 m above the inlet. If the flow through the bend is 0.4 m3/s and a head loss of 0.5 m occurs in the bend, calculate the magnitudes and the directions of the resultant force the bend support must withstand. The volume of the bend is 0.070 m3 and the pressure at the inlet is 300 kN/m2

A horizontal pipeline conveying oil (s = 0.8) contains a 60◦bend in which the internal diameter reduces from 200 mm to 100 mm. If the pipe joints on either side of the bend exert no restraint on it, what will be the force an anchorage must resist when the pressure head and the mean velocity of the fluid at entry to the bend are 12 m and 3 m/s respectively? Find also the direction in which the force acts.

A ship is fitted with six-cylinder CI engine of 75 mm bore and 100 mm stroke. The engine has a brake power output of 110 kW at 370 rpm. The volumetric efficiency at this operating condition, referred to ambient conditions, of 1.013 bar and 20˚C is 80%. You have just fitted a mechanically driven supercharger which has isentropic efficiency of 0.7 and the pressure ration of 1.6. The supercharged version of the engine has a volumetric efficiency of 100% referred...

A pipe, 900 m long and 200 mm in diameter discharges water to the atmosphere at a point 10 m below the inlet level. With an inlet pressure of 40 kPa gauge, the flow rate is 40 litres/sec. At a point half way between the pipe inlet and outlet, a new tapping is made from which water is taken at a rate of 18 litres/sec.
