(a) Opoids:

Source: Morphine is extracted from the latex of poppy plant Papaver somniverum. Heroin or smack is obtained by the acetylation of morphine as a white, odourless, bitter crystalline compound.

Mode of intake: By snorting or injection

Effect of drug on body: Opioids are the drugs which bind to specific opioid receptors present in our central nervous system and gastrointestinal tract.

(b) Cannaboids:

Source: Natural cannabinoids are obtained from the inflorescences of the plant Cannabis sativa. The flower tops, leaves and the resin of cannabis plant are used in various combinations to produce marijuana, hashish, charas and ganja.

Mode of intake: Generally taken by inhalation and oral ingestion

Effect of drug on body: They are known for their effects on cardiovascular system of the body.

(c) Coca alkaloid:

Source: Coca alkaloid or cocaine is obtained from coca plant Erythroxylum coca, native to South America.

Mode of intake: Cocaine, commonly called coke or crack is usually snorted.

Effect of drug on body: It interferes with the transport of the neuro-transmitter dopamine. It has a potent stimulating action on central nervous system, producing a sense of euphoria and increased energy. Excessive dosage of cocaine causes hallucinations.

(d) LSD:

Source: Derived from the fungus, Claviceps purpurea.

Mode of intake: They are taken orally, or ingested

Effect of the drug on the body: These drugs are called psychedelic drugs because of their effect on cerebrum and sense organs. These drugs affects thoughts, feelings and perceptions of an individual. Medically, they are used for coping depression and insomnia.
