Co(s) → Co2+(aq) + 2e

Fe2+(aq) + 2e-→ Fe(s)

b) Calculate the standard cell potential for this voltaic cell. c) Calculate the cell potential for this voltaic cell at 298 K if it is constructed using solutions of 0.14 M Co(NO3)2 and 0.27 M Fe(NO3)2. d) When looking at the magnitude of this potential, what can be concluded about the electrochemical cell?

Solutions

Expert Solution

anode   : Co(s) → Co2+(aq) + 2e   , Eo = -0.28 V

cathode : Fe2+(aq) + 2e-→ Fe(s) , Eo = -0.44 V

b) standard cell potential   = Eo cathode - Eo anode

                                        = -0.44 + 0.28

                                         = - 0.16 V

c) Q = [Co2+ / Fe2+]

          = (0.14 / 0.27)

          = 0.5185

cell potential   = Eocell - 0.05916 / n log Q

                     = -.016 - 0.05916/2 * log (0.5185)

                    = - 0.00756 V

d)

Ecell is negative . so the reaction is not spontaneous that means the cell doesnot work
