One of the earliest anesthetics was diethylether, CH3CH2OCH2CH3. Inhalation produces unconsciousness by depressing the central nervous system. One of its major drawbacks is that it is very flammable though, so it is not widely used any more during surgery.

• What is the percent composition of each atom in diethylether? • How many mol of diethylether are contained in 86.0 mg of the substance?

• How many mol of C are contained in 100.0 g of diethylether, C4H10O? • If 64.0 g of H is found in a sample of diethylether, how many grams of diethylether are in the sample?

• How many molecules of diethylether are present in 25.0 g of the substance?

• How many atoms of C are present in 25.0 g C4H10O?

• How many mol of H, S, and O are found in 1 mol sulfuric acid?

Expert Solution

One of the earliest anesthetics was diethylether, CH3CH2OCH2CH3. Inhalation produces unconsciousness by depressing the central nervous system. One of its major drawbacks is that it is very flammable though, so it is not widely used any more during surgery.

• What is the percent composition of each atom in diethylether?

Solution :- diethyl ether = C4H10O

Mass of C = 4*12.01 g per mol = 48.04 g

Mass of H = 10*1.0079 g per mol = 10.079 g

Mass of O = 1*16 g per mol = 16 g

Molar mass = 48.04 g + 10.079 g + 16.0 g = 74.119 g per mol

% of C = (48.04 g / 74.119 g)*100 % = 64.81 %

% of H = (10.079 g / 74.119 g)*100 % = 13.60 %

% of O = (16 g / 74.119 g)*100% = 21.86 %

• How many mol of diethylether are contained in 86.0 mg of the substance?

Solution :-

(86.0 mg * 1 g / 1000 mg) *(1 mol / 74.119 g ) = 0.00116 mol diethyl ether

• How many mol of C are contained in 100.0 g of diethylether, C4H10O?

Solution :-

(100 g * 1 mol / 74.119 g)*(4 mol C / 1 mol diethyl ether ) = 5.396 mol C .

• If 64.0 g of H is found in a sample of diethylether, how many grams of diethylether are in the sample?

Solution :-

10.079 g H = 74.119 g diethyl ether

64.0 g H = ? g diethyl ether

64.0 g H * 74.119 g diethyl ether / 10.079 g H = 471 g diethyl ether

• How many molecules of diethylether are present in 25.0 g of the substance?

Solution :-

(25.0 g * 1 mol / 74.119 g)*(6.02*10^23 molecules / 1 mol ) = 2.03*10^23 molecules of dioethyl ether

• How many atoms of C are present in 25.0 g C4H10O?

Solution :-

(25.0 g C4H10O *1 mol / 74.119 g)*(4 mol C / 1 mol C4H10O)*(6.02*10^23 atoms / 1 mol ) = 8.12*10^23 atoms of carbon

• How many mol of H, S, and O are found in 1 mol sulfuric acid?

Solution :- sulfuric acid = H2SO4

Therefore

1 mole sulfuric acid have 2 mol H , 1 mol S and 4 mole oxygen
