Solutions

Expert Solution

?Describe in detail an example of a disease that is caused by an imbalance of estrogen signaling.

Due to imbalances in estrogen signaling, there would be a problem in uptake of glucose as well as disturbances in expenditure of energy. This hypothesis has been put forward, referred to as the reaves hypothesis, wher, there had been an association between the insulin resistance in cells, along with a hyperinsulinemia. This is because there would be a problem in the se-xual steroids in the females. With a decrease in estrogen from the ovaries, there would be a decrease in the uptake of glucose. This is because, in maintenance of glucose levels within the cells, there would be estradiol playing a significant role. With problems in estrogen receptor, there would be dysmetabolism leading to diabetes type 2. Estrogen receptor Alpha as well as estrogen receptor beta help as estrogen binding would activate the the nucleus, acting as transcriptional modulators in promotion of target genes.

Also, if there is hyperestrogenism,, it may lead to a disruption in glucose uptake leading to insulin resistance in the obese women.

1.Describe in detail the effect caused by radiation on a) IR, b) UV and c) microwave radiation? 2.The Planck equation, DE = hu, allows to calculate the energy of any type of radiation, however in the IR for convenience and easy handling of the energy value it is preferred to use the inverse of the l in cm-1, which known as the wave number. What is the expression for the Planck equation as a function of the wave number? Apply...

Another disease caused by a mutation in a single gene is Huntington’s disease (HD), an autosomal dominant condition. It is caused by mutations in a gene required for normal nerve cell function. The mutations cause abnormal proteins to be produced which “stick” together and accumulate in nerve cells, eventually interfering with normal cell operations. Suggest two ways you could treat the disease by targeting the translation step for the HD protein and justify why each approach might be effective.

McArdle Disease (glycogen storage disease 5) is caused by mutations in the phosphorylase enzyme in muscle. The symptoms are muscle cramps, pain, and fatigue during strenuous exercise. A) An ischemic exercise test is often used as part of the diagnostic process. This test measures lactate in the blood but is not always specific for McArdle. Explain why lactate might be a good diagnostic measurement for this disease and how its production is regulated in muscle in a normal person versus...
