A pharmacy technician is asked to prepare an antibiotic IV solution that will contain 500. mg of Amoxicillin for every 100 mL of normal saline solution. The total volume of saline solution will be 1 L. How many grams of the Amoxicillin will be needed for this IV solution?
It is given that the antibiotic IV solution should containg 500.0 mg Amoxicillin in 100 mL of normal saline solution. That is the concentration is:
And, we are supposed to find out the amount of Amoxicillin in 1 L of normal saline solution,
(1 L = 1000 mL)
Say that the amount of Amoxicillin is x, in 1 L of normal saline solution
then,
(And the concentration that should be maintained is 5 mg/mL)
Now we know, 1 mg = 1/1000 g
Therefore, 5000 mg = 5000/1000 g = 5 g
Hence, 5g Amoxicillin will be needed if the total volume of normal saline solution is 1 L
