Which of the following statements about meiosis and/or mitosis is incorrect?
a. Mitosis results in 2 diploid daughter cells
b. Meiosis in humans only occurs in gonad cells
c. Homologous chromosomes line up along the metaphase plate during mitosis
d. Crossover occurs during prophase I of meiosis.
option a: mitosis results in 2 diploid daughter cells. - incorrect
mitosis is a type of cell division which forms two daughter cells and the genetic content remains the same. haploid as well as diploid, both the cells undergo the process of cell division by mitosis. If mitosis occur in haploid cells(some algae and some fungi), it will produce two haploid daughter cells. And if the mitosis occurs in diploid cells (for example somatic cells of human), two diploid daughter cells will be formed.
so, option a is incorrect.
option b : Meiosis in human only occurs in gonad cells.
This is a correct statement. Only the gonad cells undergo meiosis to form haploid germ cells.
option c is incorrect.
Homologous chromosomes line up along the metaphase plate during metaphase-I of meiosis.
option d: Crossover occurs during prophase I of meiosis.
This is also correct statement. during prophase I, homologous chromosome are lined up and crossing over occurs. Because of the exchange of genetic material between non- sister chromatids, recombination occur.
