Ranitidine is a drug that belongs to a Histamine 2 blocker and is used to treat stomach ulcers.
1) The following education can be provided for the patient:-
-advise the client not to drink as it produces more acids in the stomach and makes the drug less effective
-advise the client not to smoke as it interferes with the action of ranitidine
2) How does Ranitide work?
Ranitidine is a histamine antagonist. Histamine is produced by the body which helps in the production of stomach acid for the digestion of food. Ranitidine blocks histamine and thereby it reduces stomach acid.
3) When should it be administered with regards to meals?
Ranitidine can be taken with or without food. If the patient has heartburn it can be taken half an hour before food.
4) What are the adverse effects of Zantac? What labs need to be monitored?
Adverse effects are:
-Stomach pain
-diarrhea
-dizziness
-nausea
-chest pain
-slow or fast heart rate
-bleeding
-skin rashes
What labs need to be monitored?
-Serum Creatinine
-Liver enzymes such as AST and ALT
-GI bleeding
-Gastric pH
5) What are the herbal/ food concerns one should have while taking Zantac?
-Stomach acid is required for the absorption of some vitamins and miners such as Vit B12, folic acid, Iron, Copper. Hence, the depletion of these to be monitored and proper supplement is advised.
