2.1~Mills' blood sugar is 10.2mmol/L at 10:00 am. He had his breakfast at 08:30am (2 toast, raspberry jam and tea with two sugars). Mills stated that he did not document the previous blood sugar values and doesn't want to follow the diabetic diet plan as he feels the diabetic diet is 'boring'. Provide 2 (two) examples of strategies you would implement as a nurse in promoting the health maintenance of Mills.
The normal blood glucose levels two hours after the meal should be around 8.5 mmol/l.
Mill's blood sugar level is 10.2 mmol/l two hours after the meal which indicates hyperglycemia.
The diet plan strategies for diabetic consists of eating variety of healthy food items in moderation. Two strategies to implement health promoting diet for Mr Mill's are :
- Mill can replace packed foods such as jam with fresh fruits. This will help regulate the blood sugar level for Mill. Packed food have a high level of artificial sweeteners and sugar which increase blood glucose levels while fresh fruits have fruit sugar which is easily digestible.
- Mill can replace the toast with whole grain bread or cereals which are tasty and regulate blood glucose levels.
