The basis of Freud's psychodynamic theory of personality is the
unconscious mind. Freud's most influential work on personality
deals with behaviors and actions occurring from the unconscious
instinct, drives, and needs. These unconscious instincts give the
understanding of one's existence in the form of life instinct and
the contrary negative beliefs in the form of the death instinct.
Humans are oriented to fulfill these desires.
Major states of mind are
- Conscious- These are the information, knowledge, and facts that
people are aware of. It is the second-largest in terms of its size.
This part of mind is something that a person can directly
experience. for instance, Mohan knows the other person is his
mother.
- Unconscious- These are the unaware instincts, drive, and needs.
This is a very complex part of mind which people are not aware of.
It is the largest state of mind. It makes people experience things
indirectly or without conscious efforts. For instance, slip of
tongue- Raj when giving speech utters abusive language oriented
towards the strict teacher. Dreams experienced by
everyone.
- Preconscious- This is the state which appears to be in the
middle between the conscious and unconscious. This is the smallest
state of mind. This incorporates information that the person is not
actively aware of but can be brought into awareness with mental
efforts. For instance, Simon closing eyes and trying to recall the
name of the actor in a batman movie.
Structure of personality
- Id- this is the unconscious part of the personality that works
on the pleasure principle. For instance, Child wants ice cream so
he steals it.
- Ego- This works on the reality principle. This creates a
balanced state of personality. Reflecting behaviors which are
ethical and also fulfilling desires. For instance, Child knows if
he wants ice cream then he has to go to the ice cream store.
- Superego- This part control human behavior with ethics and
moral reasoning. For instance, Child know if he requests ice cream
from parents and buys it rather than stealing from friend- then he
is showing good behavior.
