Paul and Elder (2012) examine the “three basic functions of the human mind” in Chapter 3. How do the functions of “feeling” and “wanting” impact your reasoning?
Where have you successfully managed “feeling” and “wanting” to move towards higher level critical reasoning?
Give concrete examples from your personal or professional life.
Paul elder developed critical thinking frame work based upon three levels. As you can see the intellectual standards are come from the personal intelectual traits, these intellectual standards are applied to elements of reasoning. These reasoning again foster the nitellectual traits.
Hence the feeling and wanting are intellectual triats, one may feel or is sensitive about certain things let us say ecology. Out of this feeling one may want to plant more and more trees or do something to save water, reduce pollution from the air, water etc. One would start thinking and would go to to NGOs or people. For this the person must have accuracy, clarityin thinking. While explaining the same to people it would lead to explaining purpose, conclusions, impacts or reducing pollutions etc. This was the same project which we did at the college level. We planted trees on a hill, went every alternate day to water them. And then created a drive for planting more and more trees. Explained people benefits of it, as well using less water etc.
