Expert Solution

Answer- The Substitutes for leadership theory was developed by Steven Kerr and John.M. Jermier in 1978. According to the theory, substitutes are those variables that make leadership unnecessary for subordinates. These substitutes can be both situational and organizational that include the cohesive work group, job structure and job design. Substitutes for leadership refers that when the members of an organization have proper ability to deal with the problem than they require less monitoring and controlling. Very little guidance is required to team members when they are aware of their responsibilities and the reward system inspires them to work effectively.

Substitutes for leadership take away the power of the leader to help the group members for improving their performance. For example, Smith is a supervisor of a company and he has a team of members who are experienced and have worked at the company for many years. In this situation, all team members have good professional relations and can do their task themselves. So, Smith has less influence on the team because they do not require a leader to come in and instruct them regarding their work.
