Identify factors that determine whether performance appraisals develop and motivate staff or discourage and demotivate staff. Identify biases that influence an individuals' ability to do a fair and objective performance appraisal. Identify what conditions should be present, before, during and after the performance appraisal that will increase the likelihood of a positive outcome. What experiences have you had with performance appraisals. Evaluate your personal experience with performance appraisals based on your readings. Were they successful in motivating you, why or why not.

1. Factors determining effect of performance appraisal.

Performance appraisal is a systematic review of employee's performance for their effectiveness and afficiency in the job. It conduct periodically. Present findings are compared with previous one and provide feed fack.

Effect of Performance appraisal

  • To find potential for promotion, transfer , salary increment
  • To improve quality of job performance
  • To maintain good communication between employer and employee
  • To identify professional development of the employee( training needs, inservice education)
  • to reduce the gap in achieving actual goal and desired goal.
  • it helps to maintain organizational control

2. Identify biases that influence an individuals' ability to do a fair and objective performance appraisal.

  • lack of efficient person to perform appraisal
  • lack of support from higher level employer
  • Political influence or power hinder the appraisal pattern.
  • Lack of policies and appraisal standards or guidelines, communication between employer and employee
  • Individuals may not consider PA as a need for improvement/ change.
  • Down payement and benefit results poor performance and client may not give correct reply
  • Superiors decisions may be partial.
  • During self evaluation, the employee may not give correct informations.

3. Identify what conditions should be present, before, during and after the performance appraisal that will increase the likelihood of a positive outcome.

Before, during, after doing performance appraisal:

  • there should be a written policies, gudelines regarding performance standards, when to conduct, how to conduct, who will conduct performance appraisal. Types of formate used, What should be the solution for each employees appraisal findings.
  • Develop an appraisal commitee, set a goal and objectives, find appropriate method for assesment
  • Inform to the employee regarding date and time of assessment / interview .
  • Esatblish friendly, puposeful talk, draw a conclusion . provide immediate suggestions if needed.
  • Discuss both agreement and disagreement, future need of the employee, actual expectation of employer before endig the process.
  • After finishing assessment - submit a document , discuss with the team members, provide feed back to the client.
  • Make arrangements for further development, if needed.( in house training, inservice education, recreation programms)
  • Provide constant encouragement . Do not treat workers based on their personal characteristics.
