State the Etiology, Prognosis, and Complications for Spina bifida, sensory processing disorder and hoarding disorder.
SPINA BIFIDA
1. Etiology
- genetic-family history of neural tube defect and folate deficiency.
- nutritional - insufficient intake of folic acid by pregnant mother,
- environmental - exposure of the pregnant mother to radioactive material.
2. Prognosis
- it depends on the severity of abnormality and related environmental and personal factors. Most of the children used to have normal IQ and can walk around but sometimes with an assistive device.
3. Complications
- Meningitis, hydrocephalus, UTI, Loss od bladder and bowel control, a traumatic birth or difficult delivery of the baby, paralysis and permanent weakness.
SENSORY PROCESSING DISORDER
1. Etiology-
- birth risk factors example- low birth weight, prematurity etc., anxiety and behavioural disorders
2. Prognosis-
SPD is a successfully treated disorder, it's treatment is called sensory integration. But the exposure to stimuli can trigger the symptoms again.
3. Complications-
- Behavioural difficulties, family stress, personal stress, low academic, social isolation
HOARDING DISORDER
1. Etiology-
- abnormality of brain function related to any cause
- Neuro-psychological performance, stressful life events
- mental disorder eg. OCD or depression
2. Prognosis
- the patient learns to manage his/her things after treatment
- the need to save items decreases
- improved quality of life and learns to feel lesser anxiety
3. Complications
- poor performance of work, unhygienic condition, conflicts, injury by self-falling or falling of items or shifting,
- social isolation and eviction
