What is the etiology of acromegaly? What is the prognosis?
In most of the cases acromegaly is caused by the non cancerous tumor of the pituitary gland and this tumor is caused by the excessive amounts of GROWTH HORMONE.
PROGNOSIS- high level of GH even when the patient has no symptoms is associated with the 1.72 fold increase in all cause mortality compared to general population.
Post treatment IGF-1 AND GH concentration are best predictors of survival and life expectancy. If GH secretion is controlled then it can match the life expectancy with general population. Microadema is better (tumor less than 10mm) prognostic factor than the macroadema.
Other prognosis factors are also there like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension etc. But they are poor prognostic factors.
