Suppose the water supply in a community was a blend coming from a few different sources. Depending on the location of a residence, there would be different amounts of water from each of the different sources. One source was contaminated. From the time of contamination until the discovery of it, there were 20 live births in the community. 2 babies were born with abnormalities. Amount of water going to each of the residences where mothers resided during pregnancy was recorded. 2 birth defect babies came from residences in which the amount of contaminated water delivered was ranked highest and 4th highest.

1a.) perform a hypothesis test whether there is evidence of association between contamination and birth defects

1b.) explicitly state the null hypothesis, alternative hypothesis, your choice of test statistic, p-value, and conclusion

Solutions

Expert Solution

This is the given summary and from this i have formed the following table,

Babies born from contaminated areas Babies born from NON contaminated areas Total
Abnormal Born Babies 2 0 2
Non Abnormal Babies 0 18 18
Total 2 18 20

In order to test the association in between the water contamination and babies abnormality following are the hypothesis and testing procedure,

That is

H0: there is NO evidence of association between contamination and birth defects

H1: there is evidence of association between contamination and birth defects

Conclusion - there is evidence of association between contamination and birth defects

Water is heated in a mixing chamber by mixing it with hot water coming from a heater. The mixing chamber loses heat to the surroundings at a rate of 5 kW. The hot water enters the mixing chamber at a rate of 1 kg/s. The mixed water leaves the chamber fully mixed. - The cold water enters the mixing chamber at 200 kPa and 20°C at a velocity of 3 m/s - The hot water enters at a pressure of...

Below are statements coming from different psychological scales constructed by different authors; what the scales are measuring nor the number of scales that are represented by these items are identified. Since the psychological variables measured by the items are fairly easily identifiable, create a table in which you will group those items that represent a common concept. Then, invent a construct or variable name for these items. This is an exercise that tests your intuitive abilities to spot the supposedly...

The water supply for two cities is measured for contaminants. On 16 different days the contamination level for the water from city A was 17 parts per million on average with a standard deviation of 4.2 parts per million. The same data was collected on 14 different days for city B. The average contamination level was 11 parts per million and the standard deviation was 5 parts per million. Use 25 for degrees of freedom. At the 5% significance level...
