Suppose the water supply in a community was a blend coming from a few different sources. Depending on the location of a residence, there would be different amounts of water from each of the different sources. One source was contaminated. From the time of contamination until the discovery of it, there were 20 live births in the community. 2 babies were born with abnormalities. Amount of water going to each of the residences where mothers resided during pregnancy was recorded. 2 birth defect babies came from residences in which the amount of contaminated water delivered was ranked highest and 4th highest.
1a.) perform a hypothesis test whether there is evidence of association between contamination and birth defects
1b.) explicitly state the null hypothesis, alternative hypothesis, your choice of test statistic, p-value, and conclusion
This is the given summary and from this i have formed the following table,
Babies born from contaminated areas | Babies born from NON contaminated areas | Total | |
Abnormal Born Babies | 2 | 0 | 2 |
Non Abnormal Babies | 0 | 18 | 18 |
Total | 2 | 18 | 20 |
In order to test the association in between the water contamination and babies abnormality following are the hypothesis and testing procedure,
That is
H0: there is NO evidence of association between contamination and birth defects
H1: there is evidence of association between contamination and birth defects
Conclusion - there is evidence of association between contamination and birth defects
