If you traveled the world and saw that cultures differ dramatically in their moral judgments, would you conclude from this evidence that cultural relativism was true? Why or why not?
Cultural Relativism refers to the concept that one’s beliefs, values and practices should be understood from one’s own culture and it shouldn’t be judged from another’s culture. The world is a very diverse place with each country, states within the country and regions within the state have different types of people who belong to different religions, race, ethnicity and culture live together. Just because someone is different from another in terms of their beliefs, customs, values and practices doesn’t mean that they are wrong, instead it only means that one is different. No one can claim that others are wrong because all the others will think in the same way. Understanding and accepting the cultural differences helps people live in harmony because each culture developed its own practices over a period of time with all its members agreeing and respecting the beliefs, practices and values. So, one’s actions should be criticized or judged from one’s own cultural background and not from another’s.
