Write the IUPAC name for each of the following compounds:

a. [Cr(NH3)5Cl]2+

b.   [W(NH3)3(H2O)3]2+

c.   [Fe(H2O)6]3+

Solutions

Expert Solution

a.

[Cr(NH3)5Cl]2+

The coordination entity is positive, hence central metal atom is written as chromium.

ligands are ammine and chloro, alphabetically ammine is written before chloro, as 5 ammine groups are present therefore prefix penta is added.

ammine is neutral ligand, charge of chloro is -1 .

then, oxidation state of Cr = - 5 + 2 = + 3

hence IUPAC name is

Pentaamminechlorochromium (III) ion.

b.

[W(NH3)3(H2O)3]2+

The coordination entity is positive, hence central metal atom is written as tungsten.

ligands are ammine (NH3) and aqua (H2O),  alphabetically ammine is written before aqua, as 3 ammine groups and 3 aqua groups are present therefore prefix tri is added before both ligands.

ammine and aqua both are neutral ligands.

oxidation state of W = +2.

Hence IUPAC name is

Triamminetriaquatungsten (II) ion .

c.

[Fe(H2O)6]+3

The coordination entity is positive , hence central metal atom is written as iron.

ligand is aqua (H2O), six aqua is present, hence hexa is added as prefix.

aqua is neutral ligand, hence oxidation state of iron = +3

IUPAC name is Hexaaquairon (III) ion .
